Amanda Petry, CSW-Intern, therapist in reno

Individuals are shaped by their experiences.  Many individuals experience trauma and severe life stressors, which may cause their lives to crumble.  Trauma and life stressors may be continuous throughout an individual’s life or come unexpectedly.  My desire is to bring some healing to people who have experienced a stressful and/or traumatic event in their lives.  I devote myself to my clients, who include children, adults, and families.  I strive to help my clients develop positive self-awareness and coping skills so they may find inner peace.  I also encourage my clients to share their feelings and thoughts to build healthy relationships in every facet of their lives, while maintaining appropriate boundaries.

I believe in a holistic approach to healthcare.  I know that no single therapeutic intervention will be beneficial for every client.  Therefore, I have been trained in various evidence-based modalities such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Gestalt Play Therapy, to name a few.  Currently, I am working to hone in my skills practicing Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).  My aim is to accommodate the needs of my diverse clientele and construct an individualized treatment plan according to those needs.

I am a local of Reno, NV, and I obtained my Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) in spring 2015.  I also graduated with a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from the University of Nevada, Reno in spring 2017 in the UNR School of Social Work Advanced Standing program.  Currently, I am working on my postgraduate internship hours as a Clinical Social Worker-Intern.  I obtained some of my hours at West Hills Hospital conducting individual and group therapy in an acute psychiatric setting working with children, adults, and families.  I did my BSW internship at Renown Skilled Nursing, where I assisted in case management and discharge planning.  I was a graduate assistant at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine for the Student Outreach Clinic where I connected uninsured patients from low socioeconomic backgrounds to resources in the community.  I also worked for Northern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services (NNAMHS) as a case manager for those suffering with chronic mental illness while I was completing my master’s degree.  I did my MSW internship at Renown Behavioral Health, where I conducted individual and group therapy in the Intensive Outpatient and Partial Hospitalization programs.  I joined Healing Minds to continue my efforts in helping those in my community while having the support of my inspiring colleagues and supervisor.  On my spare time, I like to spend time with my family, friends, and my dogs, practice yoga, eat, listen to music, and read books.

I am committed to my clients, and I believe that the therapist and client connection is paramount.  I want to collaborate with my clients in their treatment and help them work towards their own therapeutic goal/s.  It is my hope that my clients find a balance in their lives and learn that even negative feelings and/or experiences can teach us something.
